Fire at Auburn apartment building displaces nearly two-dozen residents

Auburn and Lewiston Fire Departments responded to a structure fire located at 271 Court St. Monday afternoon.

AUBURN, Maine — Nearly two dozen people in Auburn have been displaced after a fire at an apartment building on Monday.

Auburn and Lewiston Fire Departments responded to a structure fire located at 271 Court St. Monday afternoon with initial reports of a person trapped inside the building, according to a news release. Upon crews' arrival, the building was reportedly found to have been clear.

Auburn firefighters at the scene told NEWS CENTER Maine the fire was contained to the top floor of the three-story building, but there was significant water damage to the lower floors.

All 20 residents and their pets evacuated safely, but have been displaced, firefighters said. The American Red Cross of Maine is reportedly working with residents to find them shelter at this time.

Firefighters attributed the quick and successful evacuation to working smoke alarms.

The blaze is under investigation but does not appear to be suspicious, Auburn firefighters said.

The Auburn Police Department, public works, and electrical division, along with Central Maine Power, assisted at the scene, according to the release.
