Sixteen people displaced after smoking materials cause heavy fire at OOB condominium

Fire officials say no one was injured but 16 people are homeless after the heavy fire burned an 8-unit condo in Old Orchard Beach.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- The improper disposal of smoking materials resulted in a heavy fire that left 16 people homeless from their condominiums in Old Orchard Beach.

Old Orchard Beach Fire and Police say an eight-unit condominium at 9 Cascade Road is a total loss after a late night fire began Saturday, July 7.

Firefighters battled the blaze for six hours that came from the second floor and roof area. Police say there were reports that someone was trapped but that turned out to be untrue.

All crews were eventually evacuated from the building due to the heavy fire that took over most of the roof. Fire officials say no one was injured in the blaze.

Another building had minor heat damage and several cars had water, smoke and heat damage.

The Red Cross was on the scene helping the 16 residents find housing.
