SOUTHPORT, Maine — Fire crews responded to a structure fire on Squirrel Island Sunday afternoon.

According to Lincoln County Communications, the call came in just before 3:30 p.m. Crews from Southport, Boothbay Harbor, and Boothbay reportedly responded to the blaze.

Southport Fire Chief Gerry Gamage told NEWS CENTER Maine a maintenance barn located on the northwest shore of the island burned to the ground. The maintenance barn is a part of the Squirrel Island Village Corporation, and stores equipment for the island, Gamage said.

As of approximately 5 p.m., crews were still standing by.
