Competitors from all over the U.S. flock to Camden for toboggan championships

The Winter Olympics may be happening in South Korea, but Maine has its own winter sports competition this weekend.

While athletes from all over the world compete at the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, folks from all over the United States and even London, came to Camden to compete for a different prize.

This weekend the Camden Snow Bowl played host to the U.S. National Toboggan Championships. Organizers say the event, which dates back to 1991, is the only one of its kind in the United States.

Competitors build wooden toboggans and compete in different races based on team size. The goal is to finish each race in the shortest amount of time.

Organizer, Holly Edwards, welcomed folks with Olympic aspirations to try their competition.

"Try your hand at this and then maybe try for something else like the Olympics luge," Edwards said, "this could sort of be where you get your feet wet."

Whether folks competed for the thrill of competition, or just to have fun, these races bring people together.

"We hadn't seen each other and spent time together in about 20 years, but this competition was kind of a catalyst," said, Andrew Aprill, who met up with friends from other parts of the country.
