Three die in Fort Fairfield house fire

A child was the only survivor and was taken to a local hospital, officials said.

FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — Three people lost their lives in a fire in a Fort Fairfield home early Thursday morning.

Shortly after 2 a.m., the Houlton Regional Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a house fire at 85 Riverside Ave. in Fort Fairfield, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release.

Upon arriving at the scene, the Fort Fairfield Fire Department determined that people were killed in the fire, according to Moss. Investigators with the state fire marshal's office responded to the scene and began an investigation.

"The investigation determined that three people, a father, mother, and daughter died as a result of the fire," the release stated. "A juvenile child was the only survivor and was transported to a local hospital."

Officials believe the deceased to be 47-year-old Erik Elmer, 39-year-old Jessica Elmer, and 17-year-old Rose Elmer. The three bodies were taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta to be positively identified.

The Fort Fairfield Fire Department was aided by fire departments from the towns of Limestone and Easton.

The investigation into the fire remains ongoing, and there is no indication of foul play, the release stated.

"There were no working smoke detectors in the home," Moss said.
