Food for thought, health, and healing

We spoke with a registered dietitian about foods that help boost our energy and immune systems during the winter months.

(NEWS CENTER Maine) -- This time of year, we tend to slow down and eat a little more comfort food.

When we don't get much sunshine we feel sleepy, sometimes a little down.

We wanted to know; are there super foods that help put the pep back in our step; and is there anything we can do to better protect ourselves from viruses that pass around in the winter? University of New England Assistant Clinical Professor of Nutrition, Anne-Marie Davee says, yes.

Davee and her student, Aly LeBlanc, say meals should start with vegetables or salad, to help you feel full faster. LeBlanc says it takes about 20 minutes for your brain to acknowledge that you feel full, so take your time eating.

She also recommends whole fruits to snack on, which contain sugars that naturally boost your mood.

Davee recommends fish like salmon or tuna for at least two meals a week, and foods that are high in Vitamin D.

Here's a sample of a weekly meal plan...
